Saturday, June 30. 2007Ospreys revisitedI wrote last week about an osprey nest that we discovered up on top of the power lines. Chris Celsie sent me a link to this article that explains some of the history behind these nests.
Left to their own devices, ospreys nest on the cross arms of hydro poles, close to wires, leading to power interruptions, fires and electrocuted birds. That's where Hydro One comes in. Over the past five or six years – since the osprey population "really exploded" – workers have built more than 50 platforms on poles, mostly around Stoney Lake and the south side of Rice Lake, says Rob Skitch, area distribution engineering technician. This is a great collaboration between the power company and a group of volunteers focused on saving these amazing birds. Trackbacks
